Coming Home to Edmonton collects 13 stories told by first-generation Syrian refugees living in Alberta. The stories demonstrate their deep commitment to Canada and desire to have their histories heard by fellow Canadians. UCCA’s team has made their best efforts to present their lives as accurately as possible. We are deeply indebted to all 13 contributors for sharing with us their difficult journeys from chaos and displacement to safety, joy, and hope in a better future. We hope this collection becomes a piece of Edmonton’s heritage for all times to come, especially for the benefit of Syrian children and the children of other refugee families, who have faced great hardships to arrive in a place where diversity is not only tolerated but celebrated. These stories, although deeply tragic, must be remembered because they communicate hope. We wish for you, dear reader, to find in this book a triumphant message of hope. Anything less falls short of the spirit with which the narrators shared their lives with us.
