Hi, How Can We Help You?

Mental Health Counselling

Mental Health Counselling

Free Psychological Counselling for Immigrants and Refugees

Often, we do not understand mental health issues well enough. Everyone faces depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, from time to time. Sometimes, these issues are mild, and an individual can deal with them. If they become serious and start interfering with a person’s day-to-day life, it is a good idea to seek help from a professional counsellor. Mental illness is not a sign of weakness; it is just being unwell. Just like other illnesses, mental illnesses can also be treated. But, if left untreated, it may take away a lot from a person’s life. It can hinder their progress and affect their relationships. For example, someone suffering from social anxiety may start avoiding meeting friends and family. Someone afraid of flying may stop travelling by air. Someone with too much exam anxiety may fail to achieve their full potential. Mental illnesses can do more harm to people than we believe. Research shows a deep connection between mental ill health and life-threatening diseases such as cancer, heart problems, and diabetes.

A mental health therapist can help us achieve good mental health and balance, which is very important for success and a happy, fulfilled life. They can help us deal with tragedies, losses, grief, illnesses, failures, death, and other such challenges of life; they can also help us realize a roadmap to our dreams. Just as one can achieve physical strength through physical exercises, one can gain mental strength through counselling.

If you are a newcomer to Canada, this is an excellent opportunity to get professional psychological help to support your mental health. Our psychologists can help children, youth, adults, and seniors. No language interpreting service is available currently. Some psychologists speak languages other than English, such as Spanish, Arabic,  Mandarin, Hindi, Urdu, Russian, and Mongolian. Others understand Punjabi, Bengali, and Ukrainian.

Please contact us at freepsychologicalcounselling@ucca.ca for more information. You can also contact the participating psychologists and book appointments as per their availability. The sessions can be in-person or online.

Please note that UCCA’s role is limited to client referral only. We are not responsible for therapists’ insurances or any other counselling-related issues.

This unique initiative is sponsored by the volunteer board directors of the United Cultures of Canada Association, Dr. Rochelle Major, Dr. Lauren Johnson and Kelty Howley.

We acknowledge the gracious support of the Civil Society Fund for this project.

I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist in Edmonton, offering counselling services in English, Russian, and Mongolian. I provide counselling services to individuals and couples, including parents and teenagers.

As an immigrant who came to Canada in 2009, I understand the struggles in starting a new life in a different country. I have a post-graduate degree from Moscow State University, and have attended Master of Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University. I have experience working in social services, including Catholic Social Services, Immigration and Settlement Program. Since 2014, I have been working in Children’s Services where I work with families from a strengths-based perspective.
My job as a social worker and extensive ongoing training and experience in counselling has helped me to create the unique approach that combines trauma informed therapy models, psycho education, and strong advocacy for clients who are economically disadvantaged, face systemic discrimination, racism, and language/ cultural barriers.

A large portion of my clinical work has been working with teenagers experiencing social isolation, self-esteem issues, anxiety, and depression. My work is rooted in the belief that a child is a part of a family system so I work closely with parents helping them to understand their children and integrate their own cultural parenting practices into the Canadian context.

My other passion is to help those in intercultural and cross-cultural relationships, especially couples where women were born outside of Canada. As a counsellor, I know that all relationships have a variety of challenges and struggles; however, cross-cultural couples have to face a lot of differences, including cultural, religious, political, and related to gender roles/ parenting. I have a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, for virtual counselling and in person in the office in South Edmonton.
